Chromebooks in Education
Chromebooks are quickly becoming the first choice in technology for many schools.
There are several reasons why schools are turning to Chromebooks.
If you would like to be a part of a live Google Hangout with myself and Adam Naor who is the head of Chromebooks at Google for the Asia Pacific region you can register HERE (This Hangout is happening on the 24th of July 2013. If you are reading this post after the 24th, you will be able to see the replay which will be posted to my YouTube channel which is youtube.com/teacherstraining)
HERE ARE JUST 5 REASONS CHROMEBOOKS ARE BECOMING SO POPULAR:
1. CHROMEBOOKS ARE INCREDIBLY CHEAP
Chromebooks are priced differently in each country. Here in Australia, you can pick up a new Chromebook with the Chrome device management feature (explained below) for under $350
2. CHROMEBOOKS CAN BE REMOTELY MANAGED
This is a fantastic feature! As the admin, you can set up the parameters for your student’s devices from your own device. You are able to manage all the details of each machine, update settings, as well as remotely and simultaneously install apps for your students.
3. YOU DON’T NEED TO PAY FOR THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE LICENCES
There are a huge number of free apps in the Chrome Webstore. Each of these apps can be added to your Chromebook and readily available. One of the huge advantages of use Chrome Web Apps is that you can just sign into your Google account and access all your apps. This means that you don’t have to worry about multiple usernames and passwords.
As in point 2 above, as a school you can decide which apps you would like your students to have and then automatically add them to their devices. You can also allow or disallow your students from finding and downloading their own apps. The process is just so simple.
4. THE DEVICES AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE
If you have a laptop that is a couple of years old, you will know that over time your hard drives and other hardware get slower over time. Because Chromebooks run on the chrome operating software that is continually being updated, the Chromebooks get better as they age.
This may seem hard to comprehend, but we have seen the battery life improve over the last six months due to the updates we have received.
5. CHROMEBOOKS START IN JUST 8 SECONDS AND WILL GO ALL DAY
One of the frustrations in the classroom is trying to manage students while they wait for their devices to start up. One of the things I love about the Chromebook is that it starts in just 8 seconds.
Another frustration in the classroom is battery life. We have found that students will get on average 5 – 6 hours usage from their Chromebooks, which is enough to get them through the day.
